Melvyn the Muddled Bee - a silly poem for children

By La Papillon

“Does anyone know where Melvyn is?!

He’s been gone for many hours!”

The Queen Bee was getting quite upset,

She’d sent him only to find flowers.

“A job that should be done by now,

He was decreed to be home by three!

When he returns; send him at once

To see me the Queen of Bees!”

The Worker Bees, who stood as Guards

At the entrance of the Royal Hive,

Escorted Melvyn to the Queen

Upon his return to the Hive at five.

He performed a little Message Dance,

Then knelt before the Queen.

She thought it was the strangest Dance

That she had ever seen!

“Do explain that Message Dance

For I do not have a clue!

What is it you are telling me?

What is your important news?”

“Oh, dear Queen Bee, I have forgotten!

I cannot remember a thing.

A human nearly stood on me,

I almost lost my sting.”

“Melvyn, Melvyn, Melvyn!

What are we going to do?

I think on the Hive Cells Building Team

Is just the job for you.”

Melvyn worked so very hard,

Of his efforts he was proud.

Building ten new cells in just one day,

He proved he was no slouch!

Again, Queen Bee summoned Melvyn,

“There is a mess you need to fix!

The cells you’ve built have seven sides!

You know they should only have six!”

“Melvyn! Melvyn!” said Queen Bee,

You mess up so many things.

You’re next job is to air the Hive.

You must stand and fan your wings!”

“Oh, that’s easy!” Melvyn thought,

Proud to be Hive Ventilator.

He flapped his wings this way and that,

Grinning like an alligator.

But he fanned his wings so fast and hard,

A dust storm he’d soon created!

Bees left the Hive in panic and droves;

Some coughed, some choked, and some fainted.

Queen Bee was now buzzing mad!

At the end of her royal tether.

“I’m sending you to Bee Hive School,

Where you’ll learn to do things better!”

Next day, at Bee Hive School,

Melvyn smartly began his classes.

Equipped with paper, pens and pencils,

Wearing a brand new pair of glasses.

“Who would like to tell me now?

What they would like to do?

When they have passed all of their tests

And have left the Bee Hive School?”

“Excuse me, Miss Buzzbee.” said Melvyn,

“Can I be first to tell?

To be a Bee Hive Guard is what I want,

I know I’d do it well.”

All through winter, at Bee Hive School,

Melvyn studied very, very hard

He was determined to prove his worth

And become a Bee Hive Guard.

The Bee Hive School term finished,

And Melvyn passed with flying colours!

He proved to be the cleverest Bee;

Much brighter than the others.

“Melvyn, now with your new glasses,

You excel at what you do.

Of you I am proud!” Queen Bee said,

“Bee Hive Guard I shall appoint you.”

Melvyn was the best Bee Hive Guard

The Bee world had ever seen!

He wasn’t muddled anymore and

Proud to be of service to his Queen.
